I dare say the nice thing to do when a small group of individuals partake in property destruction is to corral a group of 300 peaceful protesters, mace them and then arrest them... <href="http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/04/usa-chant-is-code-to-drown-out-protesters/"> Even nicer to arrest clearly credentialed press <href="http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=523937&catid=2"> and random Sears shoppers who happened to walk out of the store and into the parking lot where police had corralled the 'criminals.' Property destruction aside, was this country not founded by oppressed peoples being vociferous in their denunciation of the oligarchs ruling them? Does this not seem relevant at present? It's me Jonathan Miller.Okay. After watching the first of three parts of the Jonathan Miller program A History of Disbelief last night on TPT-2, I decided to dig up some of the great quotes provided throughout the program. A great one from Victor Hugo was "There is in every village a torch: the schoolteacher, and an extinguisher: the priest." And how about this profound outlook on death by the Greek philosopher Epicurus: Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If Death is, then I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do? Hmmmm...

A part I found particularly interesting and highly pertinent today was the examination of atheism and the founding of the United States. Was this country not established to harbor a society in which the church had no place in government? I thought so... but alas! Apparently that is no longer true...

"The United States is a Christian nation founded upon Christian principles and beliefs."
-Pres. George W. Bush

"The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian Religion."
-Pres. George Washington

Looks like someone is either ignorant, failed American History 1001 or just thinks he can spoon feed fabrications to the people to coerce them to accept his agenda. One would think this was why there is a constitution, ammendments and such and this was the premis upon which our nation exists... Discuss amongst yourselves.

And just for good measure, here are how a small contingent of other Presidents felt about religion:

"God is an essence we know nothing of. Until this awful blasphemy is got rid of there will never be any liberal science in the world"
-John Adams

"The clergy believe that any power confided in me will be used in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly"
-Thomas Jefferson

"I have seldom met an intelligent person whose views were not narrowed and distorted by religion"
-James Buchanan

"We admit of no government by divine right....The only legitimate
right to govern is an express grant of power from the governed"
-William Henry Harrison

"I do not find in Christianity one redeeming feature."
-Thomas Jefferson

"The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my religion."
-Abraham Lincoln

"I believe in an America where religious intolerance will someday end... where every man has the same right to attend or not attend the church of his choice."
-John F. Kennedy

Thanks to Toxic Thought Waste Site and secularsites.freeuk.com for help with the quotes. I have lately been dabbling in mediocrity and am eager for a change. Some would call it, albeit cliche, the good life; a house in the burbs with a nine-to-five job. While this may not be the Bohemian lifestyle most college-aged youths envision I do feel content when thinking about the future. Possibly back in Uptown for our dream home! I put a link to the current trail conditions at the right which appears to be kept very current, thanks to a plethora of local riders.murfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17263119397909826325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19404728.post-1145491620776795712006-04-19T19:01:00.000-05:002006-04-19T19:07:00.793-05:00Happy Belated Easter!
Well, another Easter has come to pass. My biggest thrill was passing the ham, mashed potatoes and baked corn around the table. Oh, that and the hours of driving. I guess. Anywho, I thought some of you might enjoy the picture at the left. The caption is, "Rejoice! He is Risen!" I think it is and early christian work, probably from the middle 6th century. Brandon also passed this bit of Easter wisdom along from McSweeney's. Hopefully this is some food for thought for next year. And hopefully there are some deviled eggs in my future next Easter...murfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17263119397909826325noreply@blogger.com80tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19404728.post-1145374006248536102006-04-18T10:18:00.000-05:002006-04-18T10:30:22.643-05:00NOFX Video Out Now!Well, all the footage has been assembled, playing synced up and the glow around Jesus' head had been digitally inserted with the greatest of care. That's right folks, NOFX's 'Seeing Double at the Triple Rock' video is out! The best place to watch it is at Fat Wreck Chords, but if you have a Myspace account you can also watch it in the music video section. I have only watched it a couple times but I think the only time you can see me is in the big group shots right up front with my fist in the air. Still pretty sweet.murfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17263119397909826325noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19404728.post-1144291493734119832006-04-05T21:36:00.000-05:002006-04-05T21:49:11.583-05:00Widescreen iPod Video
Well, the rumors are not overly recent, but in case some of you had not heard this pic is what the new iPod is rumored to look like! There are some good concept pics at Gear Live (that is where the pic here is from). There is also a nice discussion about the leaked manufacturing photo from China where the new iPods are purportedly being worked on now at theory.isthereason. And finally, a really cool video on Christian Wedlock's page that shows how the leaked photo could be faked using good 'ol Photoshop and Illustrator. Discuss amongst yourselves, lest I defenestrate you verdant ninnies!murfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17263119397909826325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19404728.post-1143659792593332882006-03-29T13:13:00.000-06:002006-03-29T13:16:32.593-06:00Hmmmmm...Well, thanks to Brandon I have a nice new blog for Twin Cities concerts: More Cowbell! That is about all the excitement for this week as I have about a week's worth of shit to do by the end of the day on Friday. And you know what that means... my barstool at the Library from 6 till close!
BTW -- don't even bring up the Gophers Hockey team... I don't think I will be able to talk about that for another week at least... :_(murfieldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17263119397909826325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19404728.post-1142960485274881222006-03-21T10:45:00.000-06:002006-03-21T11:08:44.213-06:00Final Hobey Baker Voting PhaseWell, here are the Hobey votes as of 10:45am today:

Points Name Team Pos. First of all, it was fucking awesome. The shoot was fun (where else does Jesus get to crowd surf?!?). Next, as you can see, the band was walking around and very friendly and talked to all of us, i.e. the 'three amigos' pic with Zach, Fat Mike and I. But most importantly, the boys played for about an hour after the shoot and pretty much got up on stage and asked us what to play and I swear Zach and I called two-thirds of the songs. Ohyeah -- for anyone who has never heard the entire Decline played at a show, wow is all I have to say. It was amazing. There are a few more pics on NOFX's Bore Journal with more to come I am sure, and I as well will be posting a like to all of mine.
